How do you pair an Apple TV remote?

Pair your Siri Remote with Apple TV, then connect it to your Mac for presentations, media playback, and pointer control. Apple’s official steps included.

Silver Siri Remote with an Apple TV and the corner of a MacBook

To pair a silver Siri Remote with Apple TV, hold Back and Volume Up together for five seconds near the Apple TV box. On the black glass Siri Remote, use Menu and Volume Up. Follow the pairing prompt on your television.

These are the controls in Apple’s official remote pairing guide. Start with Apple TV below, or continue to the Mac section to give your remote another job with CouchCursor.

First, check which remote you have

  • Silver Siri Remote: use the Back button. These models have a circular clickpad and either USB-C or Lightning charging.
  • Black glass Siri Remote: use the Menu button. It has a glass touch surface and Lightning charging.
  • Older white or aluminum Apple Remote: these use infrared. The Bluetooth steps in this guide do not apply to them.

Unsure which one is yours? Compare it with Apple’s remote identification guide before you start.

How to pair an Apple TV remote with Apple TV

  1. Bring it close: with Apple TV powered on, position the remote about 3 inches (8 cm) from the box.
  2. Start pairing: press Back + Volume Up together for 5 seconds. For the black glass remote, press Menu + Volume Up instead.
  3. Finish on screen: follow the television’s prompt. If it asks you to rest the remote on top of Apple TV, do that to complete the connection.

Try navigating the Apple TV home screen to check the connection.

How to connect an Apple TV remote to your Mac

A compatible Siri Remote can also control your Mac through CouchCursor. You need macOS 13 or later, Bluetooth, and the app. An Apple TV box is not required for Mac use.

Check CouchCursor’s remote compatibility list first. The USB-C A2854 and black glass A1962 have been tested on physical hardware; the silver Lightning A2540 is recognized, with physical testing still in progress.

  1. Open CouchCursor: follow its setup prompts for Input Monitoring and Accessibility in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
  2. Keep a paired Apple TV out of the way: temporarily unplug it while setting up the remote with your Mac, as shown in CouchCursor’s onboarding.
  3. Open Bluetooth settings: on your Mac, choose System Settings › Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  4. Put the remote in pairing mode: hold Back + Volume Up for 5 seconds on a silver Siri Remote, or Menu + Volume Up on the black glass model.
  5. Connect the remote: select it in the Bluetooth device list and choose Connect. When macOS shows it as connected, return to CouchCursor and test pointer movement and a click.

Apple’s Mac Bluetooth connection guide explains the macOS connection step. CouchCursor supplies the remote’s pointer, scrolling, and app-specific controls; Bluetooth pairing alone does not enable those features.

Why use your Apple TV remote with a Mac?

Presentations: Keynote and PowerPoint

  • Move through your deck: use the directional controls for previous and next slides while your presentation app is active.
  • Guide attention: toggle CouchCursor’s spotlight or on-screen laser pointer to highlight the detail you are explaining.
  • Step away from the keyboard: keep a small physical remote in your hand while presenting, teaching, or walking through a demo.

Media: QuickTime Player and VLC

  • Pause from your seat: built-in QuickTime and VLC profiles map Play/Pause to the player’s Space shortcut.
  • Reach the controls: move the pointer to the timeline, choose full screen, or click a player control with the touch surface.
  • Keep your own shortcuts: customize an app’s button assignments without changing the profile you use everywhere else.

Beyond presentations and media, CouchCursor lets you move the pointer, click, drag, and scroll. It is useful when your Mac is across a desk or connected to a living-room display.

For the exact controls in each app, read What you can do with CouchCursor.

Apple TV remote not pairing?

With Apple TV

  • Charge it first: Apple recommends a 30-minute charge when troubleshooting a remote that will not respond.
  • Retry the connection: unplug Apple TV, leave it disconnected for 6 seconds, then reconnect power and repeat pairing nearby.

If that does not help, follow the remote restart sequence in Apple’s troubleshooting guide.

With your Mac

  • Remote missing from the list: keep a previously paired Apple TV unplugged during setup, then repeat the pairing button combination close to your Mac.
  • Connected, but no pointer movement: make sure CouchCursor is running and its Input Monitoring and Accessibility permissions are enabled.

Still stuck? Work through the CouchCursor troubleshooting guide.

How do you reconnect it to Apple TV?

Disconnect the remote in your Mac’s Bluetooth settings, then follow the Apple TV pairing steps above. When you want to use it with your Mac again, repeat the Mac setup. Plan to pair with the device you want to control; this setup does not provide automatic switching between Apple TV and Mac.
